Paul Erdös

Updated: Dec 16, 2017

A book review of The Man Who Loved Only Numbers. 5 star rating (out of five stars)

The book is the story of Paul Erdös' very unique life, written by Paul Hoffman. He was a Hungarian mathematician who died in 1996, a year after I was born! Erdös dedicated his life to mathematics. He did interesting things with his moeny, he avoided relationships, sleep, and indulged in amphetamines in order to stay focused in his mathematics. The book is more focused on the life of Erdös and what he did mathematically, however the mathematics is very accessible and the book makes sense if the math is skipped over. The mathematics is interesting to those who want to understand it. I personally enjoyed the book because it was written as more of a story and as a math education major, I wanted to dive into something involved in the history of mathematics, rather than a math education book because it’s something I don’t have as much experience with. Paul Erdös was a very interesting man, therefore making the story fun to read. I loved reading about his life and wish I could achieve an Erdös number.
